Rainy Day Sages

My latest completed assemblage, 4 sages on a rainy day. 25" high by 19" wide and 7" deep. The figures are paper clay on wood, dressed in printed cloth. I grouped the 4 of them together in a painted wood box with a roof. They all have different expressions, but they are content in the moment, glad for the rain.

Velvet Torso Treasures Mannequin, Lace,Buttons +

20" high with her 5" base, this figure is made from blace cotton velvet and has many vintage treasures sewn on her. Beautiful old buttons, pink tulle under her lace skirt, I believe needle lace dollies, tassels, beads and beaded lace, ribbon, and a large vintage button at top. I really like using these torsos to showcase my found treasures and get them out there again. A one of a kind.

Abstract Black Box Assemblage

35" by 11"" by 3" deep, showcase vintage wood box assemblage. Found objects, copper box and small wood box, hard rubber wheels, wagon wheels, , vintage zipper pieces, antique wrought iron pieces, applied metal handle, metal boat elements, easel part, metal pipe joint, woven metal, wood knob , washers, hooks, snaps and vintage buttons, wood pieces and toy wheels. Whimsical abstract art. All painted flat black except the silver elements. Solid and heavy, hangers on back but can stand alone, inside or outside.

St. Francis with the birds, an assemblage in an antique wood slotted box, 13" by 21" Handmade paperclay owls, vintage repaired chalkware St. Frances from larger piece, Painted birdhouse, cut bases from an aged wood dowel, wood pieces, copper sheeting,painted and detailed vintage wood birds, ceramic vintage bird, wood painted beads, faux ivy and pine, small mirror.

20 Angels on Wood

A grouping of vintage golden angels in an antique wooden box..which years ago had another purpose of holding 7-Up bottles. Now with a soft aged worn patina , embellished with angel figures and shell buttons and golden chains to keep them from flying off. At top is a small old handmade shelf, now used to point upwards, and topped with a star. Made and found elements help dress this up, and a bit of gold paint. The overall size is 27" by 12" by 5".

Henry V111

Henry V111, finished, except for alittle ear work and a final matt sealing of his face. I changed his beard from mohair to clay, and like it better. Now he has his sword and glove, after giving up his eating utensils. So, I guess he is almost completely done...

Waterloo in a Printer's Drawer

This is an antique drawer that I've wondered what to do with for a few years. Then I found a set of vintage plastic figures and I knew they could have a war in that drawer. Maybe it is Waterloo. Gold leaf and found elements add to the look. 17" by 22", set for hanging on the wall. What fun!

I have made 3 life size figures in my Mannequin Treasures series, using themes like buttons, lace and rhinestones. Now I am making a series of 15" size using recycled embroidery, buttons,tassels, lace, jewelry pieces fabrics and found elements. It is enjoyable for me to put together, and to use up treasures that I have collected for years. I am not buying anything new but using what I have on hand. I have some beautiful pieces of lace and trim that I like to bring to life in this way, instead of keeping them tucked away. I also like incorporating memory elements, like fabrics and tiny pictures that belonged to someone. This one is a hand stitched embroidery peacock with antique buttons and shell buttons with many other elements, and I am still adding on to it. The peacock is silk thread, and was part of a framed picture that was partly destroyed , and badly faded. The tassels are also vintage silk handmade.

Henry VIII , wating for dinner

I have been working on Henry theVIII for some time, and I am going to make him a dagger and gloves for his hands, but got an idea to use a fork and knife for the time being, and then it made me smile to see him serious about waiting for his food. Maybe I should add a bit of whimsey to some of my work. He is 26" high on his wood base, cloth body with paper clay head and hands. Glass eyes and mohair beard. My friend Roberta actually started a Henry 8th figure years ago and got tired of him, so she sent me his things, and I used the shirt she made, and some of her fabrics. Thanks, Roberta! It's been fun making him..so far.

This Vincent van Gogh figure is the smallest I have made, at 22" high.

I used one of his self portraits for inspiration, done after he cut off his ear.

He is made from paper clay and cloth. Painted eyes. I just put him up on ETSY.

I'm Back!

After being in the hospital 5 times this year, the artery problem has been fixed with bypass surgery. So soon I will be able to go on my favorite walks without pain, and I am looking forward to that.

But I can always sew! I just finished a new type of Santa, an Old World Snow Santa, about 22" high. He has a painted paper clay face, and wool beard. Soft blizzard fleece overcoat with a hood.

I like his old fashion look, and will make a few more.

But, Henry the V111 is waiting to be finished. Every night as I sit in my chair, he looks out at me from his perch, wanting his coat.

Santa Time!

I'm trying all sorts of full of joy faces and expressions. A first for me is a closed eyes smile. And a big laugh with open mouth. It's good to spread joy in any way.

The time of the year to think about Santa Claus! I love Christmas, so I do enjoy making a few Santas every year. This one has paper clay head and blue glass eyes. He looks very happy and I like that. His suit is soft blizzard fleece, trimmed with faux fur. He's about 25" sittimg down in a child's chair.

Japanese Santa

I just finished a Japanese Santa. It was a challenge to stretch the ordinary limits and do something different. I'd like to make around the world Santas! He has paper clay head and hands with cloth body. Glass brown eyes, which I think bring his face to life. He has a armature that allows him to carry the weight of a garland I made of felt, crammed with Japanese toys. He's on a wood painted and glossed base. He is about 27" high. My client sent me wonderful Japanese fabrics and toys.

This is my Roberta, in her orange party dress. Her head is paper clay with glass eyes and sculpty teeth. Her dress is vintage recycled silk, and silk scarves for added prettiness.\ She was included in a Treasury on Etsy recently. I am glad she's getting attention. She's always very happy and fun to look at. Now I am working on more paper clay figures, pretty much letting them be who ever they want.

Missing my Art

Last week an old friend from high school came to stay with me for a whole week. It took my 2 weeks to get ready for her, to clean and decluter the guest room/ "storage" room. I stashed my art projects away, in closets, etc. Nothing left around my sitting area to work on at night. Instead on sewing or working in clay, we talked and watched movies. Otherwise we were gone alot traveling. I saw places in Oregon that I have not visited yet, so it was fun and interesting. My daughter joined us a few times. Now, she is gone but my brother and wife are coming for the weekend. So I will keep the house tidy til they are gone. But some is creeping out now. And I'm glad it is. I have to be doing something with my hands if I am sitting. I love to have some form of art on my plate for the day!

Cats and Birds

Lately I have been sidetracked from my usual work. I have been making cats and birds from recycled knitted wool, that I felt. Its wonderful stuff, there is so much you can do with it! I have made bracelets, using my button collection too. But the cats are selling at Latimers in Tillamook so I am making them mostly now, while the season is in. I am also interested in making clothing with it. Altered couture.

But soon, I will be getting back to my Japanese Santa, giving him layers of silk clothing.

Latimer in Tillamook

I live in Hillsboro, 60 miles from the beautiful Oregon coast. I display some of my work at Latimer Quilt and Textile Center, which has a gallery of artists' work. If you have heard of Tillamook Cheese, that factory is a few blocks from Latamer. I drove there yesterday to deliver some recent work, some felted wool fat cats and wood and wool Santas, and a wool bird. I love it there, the place is a converted old school house, and has wonderful handmade items there. Always beautiful quilts too, new and old, which are amazing. Their "season" is on the verge of starting, as they get alot of traffic there in Summer. I love the drive to it also, passing through a forest and then seeing the green valley dotted with contented cows. I think I will make several more trips there this suummer.

Going Home

Tomorrow I am going to San Diego for a visit, and all my family is there, except for my daughters. It's been 5 years since I moved to Oregon, so it will be nice to see everyone again.
We will all visit at Easter Sunday at my brother's home. I am excited! But I will take a head to work when we are sitting around at night. My nylon sculpted heads take alot of hours to complete, and all I need is a nylon stuffed ball of fiberfill and needle and thread, and eyes. I can't not do something with my hands if I am idle.....
I find that I come back refreshed and more ideas come to my head when I take breaks like this.
Just keep paper and pencil ready to jot down the ideas.

The Right Look

I am still strugling with getting the right look with my work. It seems that a figure is done, until I take a look at it later and notice that something is off. How is it that I can look at a head and it seems good, then upside down or in a picture it is off? My process is to finish, set it in the living room to view it, then put it away for awhile and later bring it out and try to see it in a new light. Pictures really help too. It is frustrating though. But if a figure takes a good picture in any light or background, I know it's good and finished. Right now I am redoing Obama's nose for the 3rd time, and his color is alittle too dark. he has new glass eyes though, and a good body, so eventually he will be done! It is a good thing that I work on a few things at the same time, so I have time for a review of each.

They are nylon sculpture and cloth and recyled felted wool, so they are soft!

which I just joined...I do think I am going to like it.
Also I am excited about getting the glass eyes in the mail today, which I need to complete my Obama figure in paper clay that I am working on. I had finished him, but used plastic brown eyes, and he needed the extra sparkle and realism that glass eyes give.

Bob Dylan Figure completed

Bob Dylan's figure is complete, except for minor details...guess I could go on and on with him, but sometimes that actually makes problems. So more pictures and different ways of looking at him to see if any adhustments need to be made. He is big, 39", made of paper clay and cloth, with inner armature. I made his guitar and harmonica, and harmanica holder...it was a fun project. He was a commission made late last year.
